On the Ninth Day of Christmas
Hey! Today I thought that I'd share my Write Christmas Entry with you guys. This was a writing contest that was hosted by Charis Rae and a few others (sorry, I can't remember) and although I didn't win, I still had fun writing my entry. It's different from my normal writing and I had to incorporate some romance because of the prompt, but I hope you guys enjoy reading it!
Addie walked down the busy street, watching the cars go by in a blur of headlights and colors. Christmas lights winked down at her as she looked at the pretty things in the windows. She would be completely happy except for one thing: Andrew. Childish though it was, she was utterly perplexed by his behavior. One day he would be all laughs and smiles, flirting his way around, but the next he wouldn't speak to her, and his mixed signals were driving her nuts. Addie needed to ask him, but she couldn't bring herself to do it, because it would be absolutely mortifying if she were wrong.
She had no idea what to think or feel; all she had ever learned about boys in her 16 years of life seemed to make no sense anymore. Her thought process was going berserk, so she did what always helped her calm down: take a walk. So far she had come 3 miles from her family's apartment and had no intention of going back anytime soon. She walked on and on, not noticing all of the busy shoppers briskly zipping through their Christmas shopping and jostling her on the sidewalk. She tuned it all out, simply walking with no aim.
Before long, it started to snow; the little tiny snowflakes slowly turned to large flurries that settled in her hair and on her eyelashes. Addie realized the terrible thing she had done in not grabbing her mittens or her hat, and quickly located a Starbucks in which to warm up. She walked in, greeted by the delicious smell and warmth of coffee, and the barista (Kevin, she read on his name tag) smiled and inquired what he could get for her. She politely declined, for she hadn't thought to bring any money, and sat down at a small table next to the window. She resumed being lost in thought, and observed the Christmas shoppers, lights on the trees, and many cars from behind the glass.
This went on for 5 minutes until she was awoken from her reverie by someone calling her name. She looked around and, to her horror, there stood Andrew. "Hi, Addie!" Addie gave a miniscule smile and maintained a majestic silence. "Can I sit down?"
"I guess," she said, but he had already sat down across from her. "What are you doing here? I thought you had play practice tonight."
"It was cancelled. They're predicting a kind of a blizzard," he grinned, indicating the snowflakes outside, which were now falling thick and fast. "You want a drink?"
"Sure," Addie mumbled, now even more confused than ever. She puzzled over his behavior as he ordered two salted caramel mochas; she puzzled over his behavior as they both sat back down; she puzzled over Andrew as she relapsed into silence and stared again out the window. She puzzled over everything, not noticing the awkwardness of her silence, not noticing Andrew's deep hazel eyes taking in every detail of her face, not noticing the way he opened his mouth to start a conversation, but closed it and flushed as he became oddly interested in the tile pattern of the floor.
The barista walked over and set their drinks on the table; he smiled at the way they pretended that the other wasn't there, and so he decided to start the conversation for them. "You two gonna kiss?" He asked. With an awkward chuckle, he pointed to the mistletoe over their heads. He left the table.
Addie finally understood what Andrew wanted. Addie finally understood that she wanted it, too.
I hope y'all like my entry! It was so much fun to write. And congratulations to the winners of the contest, too!!!
